Celebrating the Fundamentals of Infection Prevention

EBOS Healthcare is proud to show its support for Infection Prevention and Control Week (October 15-21), coinciding with the International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW). The theme for this year's event is "Celebrating the Fundamentals of Infection Prevention", emphasising the importance of returning to the basics of infection prevention for everybody.

What is Infection Prevention and Control and why is it important?

The World Health Organisation defines Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) as a practical and evidence-based approach to prevent avoidable infections that harm patients and healthcare workers. Infection prevention and control in healthcare is fundamental in safeguarding the health and well-being of patients, healthcare workers and the community. It encompasses a range of measures to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases and maintaining a safe environment. Achieving quality healthcare would not be possible without the application of effective infection prevention and control measures. (World Health Organisation, 2023)

These measures include:
  • Hand hygiene: Regular handwashing and using hand sanitisers are essential in preventing the transmission of pathogens.
  • Use of personal protective equipment: Face masks, gloves, and gowns provide a physical barrier against infectious agents.
  • Proper environmental cleaning: Disinfection of surfaces and equipment sterilisation helps eliminate or reduce pathogens.

Infectious diseases can easily be spread from person to person and cause outbreaks, ultimately leading to increased morbidity, hospitalisations and death. The absence of infection prevention and control measures can also result in the transmission of infections among patients, visitors, and healthcare workers. By implementing safety measures, vulnerable patients are protected from preventable harm, and healthcare workers are shielded from occupational exposure to infectious diseases. (ACSQHC, 2023).

EBOS Healthcare takes pride in working exclusively with and distributing products to some of the leading Infection Prevention companies in Australia and New Zealand.
