What is Carers Week?
National Carers Week (11-17 October) is an annual campaign dedicated to recognising and celebrating and bringing awareness to over 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care and support to family or friends struggling with mental illness, hardship, illness and disabilities. The campaign, run by Carers Australia, has been active for over 30 years and is supported by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
Campaign activities
The week consists of Morning teas, community walks, social activities, giveaways, wellbeing activities, educational workshops and information seminars, as well as carer expos and community events, all designed to bring awareness, recognition and support to those Australians who sacrifice their time to care for loved ones who are struggling.
How to Get Involved
- Attend an event: Support Australia's carers by attending or hosting one of the many events.
- Start a conversation: Start discussions with co-workers, friends and family who work as unpaid carers.
- Acknowledge and appreciate: Verbally recognise the efforts of carers you know, Be a compassionate and empathetic listener and Express gratitude towards carers.
- Encourage self-care:Share helpful resources such as health and wellbeing apps and support groups. If you are an employer, assist carers by providing flexible work arrangements.
- Check in Regularly: Reach out and encourage carers to talk if they need support
