Nutrition and Wound Healing

NUTRITION AND WOUND HEALING

Eating a well-balanced diet with a balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates and a variety of vitamins and minerals is important for optimal health. However, when you have a wound, there are specific nutrients and foods for wound healing, that all assist in the healing process.

Arginine, as well as other key nutrients including energy and protein are vital for optimal wound healing.1

Arginine is a key amino acid in the process of wound healing

Protein is made up of chains of individual amino acids (the building blocks of protein). One amino acid called arginine is very important for the healing and repair of wounds as it promotes protein synthesis, collagen formation, nitric oxide production and stimulating growth hormone production.1,2,3,4

Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) providing 9g of arginine per day have been shown to improve the rate of healing in patients with pressure injuries, and is supported by the International Pressure Injury Clinical Practice Guidelines.2,5,6,7
