Since the introduction of pulp disposable bedpans, urinals, bowls, etc, an ever increasing number of Hospitals and Aged Care Facilities have switched from traditional pan flushers and plastic reusables. The majority have made this decision after considering the following factors:
Infection Control
Reusable bedpans, urinals and bowls, by their nature carry the risk of cross infection if inadequately decontaminated. Vernacare breaks this chain of cross infection
Cost
The savings from using the Vernacare system are considerable when you look at the massive reductions in power and water consumption; the machine shuts down after each cycle and only uses cold water. Add to this the significant reduction in the risk of cross infection and the savings in nursing time.
Nurse and Patient Preference
Patients have expressed a preference for disposables as it means they are always provided with a fresh receptacle. Nurses prefer the speed (with four items allowed per cycle that lasts only two minutes) and cleanliness of the Vernacare system. The Occupational Health and Safety Benefits are also significant as the Vernacare system produces no steam, no splashing from sluicing, no used pans/bottle waiting for processing, no chemicals and no potential burns.
Maintenance
Vernacare macerators come with a three-year warranty which in itself is a statement of the reliability of the units. They also do away with the continual (and expensive) checking required for time and temperature with the reusable system. Find out why more and more Hospitals and Aged Care Facilities are disposing of reusables and moving to Vernacare every day.
Environment
The medical pulp is made of recycled newspaper impregnated with a small amount of beeswax to make it fluid retentive. The discharge from a Macerator is 100% bio-degradable. Foreign objects cannot escape to sewage as no chemicals are required. The use of only cold water results in substantial savings especially when compared to the cost involved in sanitising a reusable pan.
Architect
Freedom of design with pan room location, size and number of pan rooms
No venting to an external wall required
No sluice required
No extra copper or high temperature retentive piping required as only cold water is used
